Bronchitis (Latin bronchitis, from bronchus + -itis - inflammation) is a disease related to the respiratory system of the human body, in which bronchi are involved in the inflammatory process. It is one of the frequent reasons for seeking medical help. In most cases the main cause of acute bronchitis is an infection - viral or bacterial. In such case drugs and antibiotics are required to treat acute bronchitis.

Chronic bronchitis can develop as a complication of acute bronchitis, or as a result of a prolonged effect of non-infectious irritating factors, such as dust. In some cases, bronchitis develops in the bronchial obstruction due to the edema of the mucous membrane, such bronchitis is called obstructive. Treatment of bronchitis depends on the provoking factor, such as the course and form of the disease.

Acute bronchitis usually lasts about 10 days. Like other respiratory diseases, bronchitis may accompany a cold or the flu, or may arise as a consequence. However it can start on its own, without a visible preliminary cause. The disease usually begins with a dry cough, which can be severe, especially at night, and can thereby deprive the sufferer of normal sleep and rest. After a few days, dry cough turns into a wet cough, which can be accompanied by a slight increase in temperature, fatigue and headaches. Heat, malaise, fatigue and apathy can only take a few days, but the cough can last for several weeks. In some people, coughing can last for several months, as the healing of inflammation of the bronchial ways is a slow process.

If the cough lasts for more than a month, you should consult a specialist pulmonologist and find out if there is any irritation to the respiratory tract and coughing other than inflammation. In some patients with bronchitis, prolonged for several months irritation of the bronchial tract can lead to asthma.

It is necessary to consult a doctor if the patient coughs up blood along with phlegm to exclude serious diseases such as tuberculosis or lung cancer.

Treatment of Acute Bronchitis

In most cases, acute bronchitis is caused by a viral infection, not a bacterial infection. So the acute stage usually passes without the use of antibiotics by itself within a week. However you should always care about your acute bronchitis. Antibiotics can be used in the treatment of acute bronchitis, having a bacterial nature, and sometimes as an auxiliary agent in case of suspected complications or concomitant diseases.

There are effective ways of treating cough without drugs as well, including acute bronchitis.

The patient needs to rest as much as possible and drink a lot. A sufficient amount of caffeine-free beverages, such as water or juices or herbal tea (up to 2 to 4 liters of fluid per day) is required. In cold climates, cough is traditionally treated by drinking warm tea with raspberries, honey, lime flower and heated alkaline mineral water. (useful herbs for bronchitis)

As a cough relief, rubbing the throat with warm camphor oil is recommended.

In order to promote speedy healing of inflamed bronchial tubes, smokers are strongly encouraged to dramatically reduce the number of cigarettes (and if possible, it is better to quit smoking altogether)

Chronical bronchitis

Bronchitis is considered chronic if a cough with sputum discharge lasts at least three months a year for two years or more. Chronic bronchitis (CB) is the most common chronic nonspecific disease of the respiratory system.

 The main causes of CB:
  • prolonged irritation of bronchi by harmful factors (dust, carbon monoxide, various chemicals), tobacco smoking
  • recurrent respiratory infection (viruses, influenza rod, pneumococci)
  • long exposure to dry and cold air
  • More rarely, CB is caused by some genetic abnormalities.
CB can be secondary on the background of inflammatory diseases of the lungs and upper respiratory tract.
